This week focusses on the following areas:

    • Ruta de las cigüeñas - the Stork Route. An extraordinary concentration of White Stork nests.
    • Large numbers of Black Kite, and Marsh and Hen Harrier, Black-shouldered Kite, Golden Eagle
    • Spain's largest concentration of nesting Lesser Kestrel at Acedera (just by our hotel)
    • the unique area of steppe called La Serena to see nesting Montagu's Harrier, Great and Little Bustard, Sandgrouse, Collared Pratincole, Stone Curlew, Larks
    • Trujillo and Monfragüe
    • the RAMSAR area of the Orellana reservoir, with colony of Gull-billed Tern
    • valley of the Zújar for Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Purple Heron, Night Heron, Bee-eater,
    • the great cliff at Puerto Peña to see the Griffon Vulture, Black Vulture, Egyptian Vulture and Black Stork
    • Mérida and Cornalvo. Mérida has the best Roman remains in Spain and a wealth of bird life along the banks of the Guadiana river. Cornalvo is a Natural Park centred round a Roman reservoir. It has large numbers of Azure-winged Magpie, raptors, acuatic species and waders. We will be given an introductory talk at the Reserve's Centro de Interpretación.
    • Villuercas and Guadalupe. This is the mountainous area in the north of the area.
    • Sierra de Pela for warblers and raptors - this is an area of Mediterranean woodland which has the status of a ZEPA (Area of Special Protection for Birds)
