Visits to Extremadura

Why We think Extremadura is an extraordinary and fascinating place and would hope to share some of our enthusiasm for the region with its birds, natural history and also its human history.

Who The trips are designed for birders who have a broad general interest in birds and their ecology rather than for for the twitcher whose main motivation is the accumulation of ticks.

What for Apart from the wonderful range of birds - see "Species" - It has the best Roman monuments in Spain, vast and beautiful open spaces unique in Europe, and friendly and hospitable people.

How The group trips go into the field with one of our local experts and an English speaker to ensure there are no communication problems. Individuals or paris of birdwatchers discuss in advance what they want to see and what is currently on the area with one of our English partners, then go out with Manolo or Luis in search of the specific species.

When Spring (Feb - May) is the most popular time but autumn and winter can be excellent too - see the section "When to visit". We have organised weeks at various times. Outside these times (apart from the height of summer), small groups or individuals are welcome as "Independent Birders" - see "Booking a trip"

Where We work out of Orellana la Vieja, by the Orellana reservoir. This is at the heart of the irrigated wetland area, and close to the last remaining steppe in Western Europe with its unique ecology.

Accommodation is at the 3* lakeside hotel Hospedería de Orellana, overlooking the lake and the steppe beyond.
